Bike art show with gearing up
The Bike Part Art Show was last Saturday night - and thanks to the support of Old Glory Builders - Gearing Up women had 8 pieces of art for auction - all proceeds benefitting Neighborhood Bike Works! Below are some photos of the art in action!
Gearing Up is a nonprofit providing women in transition from addiction, abuse and/or homelessness with the opportunity to safely ride a bicycle for exercise, transportation, and personal growth.
We work with women at 3 recovery/re-entry programs in Philadelphia - as well as host an indoor cycling program for women who are incarcerated at the Philadelphia County Women's Prison.

Solar hot water gets up and running
The beautiful radiant Tec solar domestic hot water system was finished up today at the Reno st commons. With in a few hours we had a tank full of hot water ready for use. This is the 5 system we have installed by these guys and the quality is superb. Lots of easy to read instructions and there tech department is top notch. I think I'm most excited though about not having to answer where the solar panel goes!

Green Roofs, IN!
Our Sedums were delivered yesterday and planted today. Nothing felt better than giving them their first drink of water in their new home. These look pretty sparse right now but there self seeding and should cover the entire area within the first year. I think I can already hear the utility bills lowering.

Here you will see the essential tools for an effective installation of a green roof. We were a bit shocked to find out how important a pack of cigarettes were to the operation. One of the installers couldn't work without a smoke... despite the 103 degree weather.
Of course, some dirt and some plant material (not shown) are on the "essentials" list as well.

Roof Water Test at Lawrence st.
In preparation for our green roof of sedums, we had to perform a "flood test". A test in which you flood the roof with about 1ft of water for a specified amount of time to simulate saturated plantings and soil. Let me tell you there is something a little disheartening about all that water up there, we made the best of it and had our lunch up there in bare feet beach style. Thanks to our roofer for making a watertight installation. Look for an update when planting day comes around.

While traveling in MAINE last fall Kristal and I spied this house on the coast. You cant tell from the photos but its about 200 yards from the ocean on a rocky beach. I love this house. We couldn't get very close but the fall sunset framed it perfectly. Maybe an OLDE GLORY project will have some of these influences in the future.

819 S Warnock St, philadelphia
Here Is a project that Chris and Myself have just finished up. The project has beed a true study in logistics. From the start it was designated to be built inside of an existing garage that is attached to an occupied by the owners dwelling. In order to keep the existing house dry we had to build up under the roof 2 floors and then plan the removal of said roof with the weather. When the siding was to be started we had to receive permission from all the neighbors who's yards back up to the project along christian st. No easy task considering most of the buildings go right to the property line at a myriad of heights including Isgros bakery and there cooling equipment. All and all I think we took some valuable lessons from this one. This house is for sale,Please check out the MLS.
